BASEBALL RALLIES TO PICK UP A SPLIT AT KANSAS

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Junior Errick Dessens tied his Sacramento State career high with a four-hit day and junior Jakob Poturnak extended his hitting streak to 12 games with three hits as the Hornets picked up a split of their midweek series at Kansas, rallying for a 7-4 come-from-behind win against the Jayhawks on Wednesday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.

Dessens finished 4-for-5 with his sixth home run of the season, three runs, scored and a pair of runs driven in, while Poturnak helped power the offense at the heart of the order with a 3-for-5 day, a double, a run scored, and an RBI. In all, seven different Sacramento State players finished with hits on the day while six players drove in runs.

Poturnak's 12-game hitting streak matched Dessens' run — which ended in Tuesday's opener with Kansas — for the longest by a Hornet this season, while Dessens posted his second four-hit game of the season and his team-high 10th multi-hit game. Meanwhile, with a single in the fourth, senior Jace Jeremiah reached base safely for the 19th consecutive game.

Freshman right-hander Trevor Wilson (1-3) picked up his first collegiate win in relief of starter Ethan Lay, throwing two innings, allowing a pair of runs on three hits and striking out four. Lay allowed a run while scattering six hits over the first four innings of the day, walking only one and striking out seven.

He stranded six Kansas (16-9) baserunners — including the bases loaded in the second — and worked out a jam in his final inning, leaving two Jayhawks on.

Junior left-hander Sean Carey earned his first career save, pitching the final three innings, allowing a run on two hits and striking out three to close out the contest.

Jeremiah put the Hornets (10-16) in front by driving home a run in the fourth, singling through the right side to score Dessens for the 1-0 lead.

Kansas answered with a solo home run to lead-off the fourth, then took the lead back with a two-run triple in the fifth to go up by a pair.

However, Sacramento State's offense did well to answer back in its half of the sixth, plating three runs to regain the lead for good. An RBI double by Poturnak, an RBI single by Sam Harry, and a run-scoring ground ball by Cameron Sewell put the Hornets up a run and Dessens made it a three-run lead with his sixth home run of the season — a two-run shot — in the seventh for a 6-3 lead.

The Jayhawks clawed a run back in the eighth, but Sacramento State did the same in the ninth as Jamie Mullin doubled, was sacrificed to third by Jacob Cortez, and scored on Luis Pimentel-Guerrero's sac fly to center for the final 7-4 score.

Thursday is a travel day for the Hornets, who head to Omaha, Neb., for a three-game series against Creighton At Charles Schwab Field — home of the NCAA Men's College World Series. The series against the Blue Jays begins on Friday (March 27) at 4 p.m. PT.
