BASEBALL FALLS IN OPENER AT CREIGHTON

OMAHA, Neb.. — Junior Erick Dessens finished with a team-high two hits and freshman Sam Harry extended his hitting streak to six games on Friday evening, but host Creighton scored six unanswered runs to erase an early deficit en route to a 6-2 win in the series opener at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb.

Dessens logged his team-best 11th multi-hit game of the season, posting singles in the third and eighth innings to help pace the offense. Harry added a single in the fourth and was hit by a pitch in the ninth, now taking over the mantle of longest active hitting streak by a Hornet at six.

Junior Jakob Poturnak, who entered the day with a 12-game streak, was held to without a hit, while senior Jace Jeremiah, who had reached base safely in 19 consecutive games was kept off the basepaths on Friday.

Sacramento State (10-17) was out of the gates first with a pair of runs without the benefit of a hit in the third inning to grab a 2-0 lead.

Cameron Sewell reached on a dropped third strike then scored three pitches later when Jacob Cortez's sacrifice attempt was thrown away allowing him to reach second and enable Sewell to come all the way around for the 1-0 lead.

Michael Perazzo followed with a successful sacrifice attempt to move Cortez to third and was followed by a squeeze from Brett Ott, who plated a second run with his bunt to score Cortez.

The Hornets managed two more hits in the inning off the bats of Luis Pimentel-Guerrero and Dessens with two outs, but could not manage another run.

Creighton (12-11) wasted little time in answering scoring three runs in the home half of the third on an RBI single and a two-run home run, then slowly pulled away with another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Starter Carson Timothy (2-2) suffered the loss, charged with four runs on three hits and striking out a pair over four innings. Colin Hunter tried to keep his team close, throwing the final three shutout innings, working around a pair of hits and striking out three.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Noon PT on Saturday (March 28).
