SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State senior guard
Prophet Johnson has been named the Big Sky Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Hornets to a pair of home wins last week. That included an 83-69 win over Northern Arizona, and 93-89 overtime victory vs. Northern Colorado.
Johnson becomes the first Hornet to earn the weekly honor this season. The Dayton, Ohio, native averaged 29.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 4.5 steals and 1.5 blocked shots. He scored 29 points vs. NAU, and added a season-best 30 in the win over Northern Colorado.
Johnson shot 54% (20-37) from the field, 39% (5-13) from the 3-point line, and 82% (14-17) from the free throw line. He led all players in scoring in both games, and drew a combined 13 fouls.
In the win over the Bears, he registered 30 points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and three steals. He scored 21 points after halftime, hit the biggest shot of the game (a turnaround jumper to give the Hornets an 89-85 lead with 26 second left in OT), and went 10-of-12 from the free throw line.
In the victory over the Lumberjacks, Johnson had 29 points, six rebounds, four assists, a block and career-high six steals. Johnson shot 11-of-19 from the floor, 3-for-6 from distance, and 4-of-5 from the line.
The nation's third best rebounding guard, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Johnson is now averaging 16.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.8 steals per contest. The 2.8 steals are the sixth best mark in the country. His 8.0 boards per game are the most for any player in the nation standing under 6-foot-5.
The Hornets (6-11, 2-3) are back in action this week for road games Thursday at Idaho (6 p.m.), and Saturday at Eastern Washington (2 p.m.).
