CROSS COUNTRY HEADS TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FOR UCR INVITATIONAL

Hornets to compete for third time this season

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State cross country teams will reach the midway point of its season as it competes the UCR Invitational on Saturday morning. The women's 6K Invitational will start at 7:15 a.m. and the men will follow with their 8K race at 7:50 a.m.
 
This week will be the third competition for the Hornets this season but first outside of Northern California. The team began its season at the USF Invitational in San Francisco and, two weeks ago competed at the Kim Duyst Twilight in Ceres, Calif. In that meet, the women's team finished in second place in the team standings and had three golfers in the top 10. Sophia Dudley led the trio by running 21:17.0 to finish in seventh place. Marina Lipary was just a half-second back in eighth place and Tia Oliver place ninth in 21:20.5.
 
The men's team was led by Ryan Martin for the second-consecutive meet. Martin ran the 8K course in 24:27.2 to finish 22nd overall. Brandon Moreno placed 27th in 24:46.0.
 
The Sacramento State women enter this week ranked 15th in the latest regional rankings. The Hornets are one of four teams in the UCR Invitational that are in the top 15 in the west. California Baptist leads pack at No. 7, San Francisco is ninth and UC San Diego is 14th.
 
This year will be the seventh time Sacramento State has competed at the UCR Invitational. Last season, the women placed ninth in the invitational race and the men were second in the open. Oliver had the fastest time for the women, running 20:27.8. Martin paced the men in 25:02.6.
