WOLCOTT, Colo. — Tova Hatton shot 71 and
Sophia Lee 72 to guide the Sacramento State women's golf team during the opening round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic on Monday. The Hornets are tied for ninth place out of 20 teams with two rounds remaining.
Facing some of the nation's best team and enduring a lengthy weather delay, Sacramento State is just six strokes out of the top five. Hatton is tied for 11
th at 1-under par. The sophomore started on the 10th hole and recorded her first birdie on the par-4 13
th. She added a second birdie on the par-5 18
th to get to 2-under and remained there until a bogey on the par-4 eighth.
Lee had a bumpier path to her even-par round of 72. The freshman was 1-under on the back nine with birdies on Nos. 11, 14 and 15 and bogeys on Nos. 13 and 17. Lee started the front side of the course with a bogey before returning to 1-under with a birdie on the par-4 fourth. She had five pars over her final six holes with the exception being a bogey on the par-5 sixth.
Darla May Dela Torre added a round of 73 and is tied for 33
rd place. Dela Torre had one birdie and one bogey on the back nine to stand even at the midway point of her round. She bogeyed three of the first holes on the front nine but rallied late with birdies on Nos. 8 and 9.
Ella Kraft and
Jocelyn Tseng each shot 78 to complete the team total. Kraft had four birdies, six bogeys and a pair of double bogeys in her round. Tseng tallied a birdie, three bogeys and two doubles.
LSU owns a two-stroke lead at 14-under. The Tigers were led by Francesca Fiorellini who set the school and course record with a 9-under par round of 63. Fiorellini posted nine birdies without a bogey.
USC (12-under), Pepperdine (10-under), Arizona (1-under) and Denver (even) completed the top five in the first round.
The Hornets will begin the second round at 9 a.m. PT off the first tee. The team will be paired with Charlotte, Mercer and Northern Arizona in 10-minute increments.
