GOLD CANYON, Ariz. — Another record-breaking season came to a close for the Sacramento State women's golf team as the Hornets finished in 10
th place at the NCAA Gold Canyon Regional on Wednesday at Superstition Mountain Country Club. Sacramento State totaled 307-298-298-903 over the three days and finished one stroke behind 44
th-ranked Virginia Tech in the standings.
Sneha Sharan again led the team with an even-par round of 72. Sharan picked up the team's first birdie of the day with one on the par-5 second hole. However, she moved back above par with a double-bogey on the par-4 third hole and remained there until a birdie on the par-3 sixth. The senior made the turn at 1-over par following a bogey on the par-4 ninth. She finished the back nine at 1-under with a birdie on the par-4 14
th and eight pars.
Sharan tied for 12
th overall which is the highest finish by a Sacramento State golfer in the program's history at an NCAA Regional. Her 54-hole total of 75-71-72-218 and score of 3-over par are both tied for seventh in school NCAA Regional history.
The second lowest score on Wednesday came from freshmen
Tova Hatton and
Darla May Dela Torre who each shot 75. Hatton had the best start on the team with birdies on Nos. 6 and 7 helping her to a 1-under par total on the front nine. She played the back nine at 4-over with four bogeys. Dela Torre had a slower start with four bogeys on her first eight holes. She earned her first birdie on the par-3 12
th and added another on the par-4 14
th. She played the final four holes at 1-over with three pars and a bogey.
Caitlin Maurice recorded her second-consecutive round of 76 and tied for 45
th overall. Maurice had a steady start to her round with 12 pars and two bogeys over the first 14 holes to leave her at 2-over. A birdie on the par-4 15
th was followed by a birdie on the par-4 16
th to keep her at that total before closing with consecutive bogeys.
Oregon ran away with the team title, finishing at 12-under par and winning the event by nine strokes. Arizona State was second at 3-under while Oklahoma State (2-over) and Mississippi State (11-over) finished third and fourth, respectively. The final team to advance to the NCAA Championships was Cal State Fullerton which finished at 23-over to edge Auburn by one stroke. Auburn's Anna Davis also moves on as she was the low individual outside of the five qualifying teams. Davis was 1-under par for the tournament to finish three strokes ahead of Sharan.
Season Notes
- Sacramento State's season scoring average of 289.91 strokes per round broke the previous record of 291.23 from 2022-23 by over a stroke.
- Sharan and Maurice recorded the top two single-season scoring averages in school history. Sharan averaged 71.80 in 30 rounds while Maurice had a mark of 72.27 in 33 rounds. The previous record was set by Tess Blair (72.80) in 2019-20.
- The pair also now rank first and second in rounds even or under par. Sharan posted 18 rounds during the year while Maurice had 17. Jennifer Koga previously held the record with 15 last season.
- Maurice and Ella Kraft moved into a five-way tie for first place with 33 rounds played in a season. Hatton and Dela Torre are tied for sixth with 32 rounds apiece.
- Sharan set the school single-season record with six rounds in the 60s. Maurice is tied for second with five while Kraft is tied for sixth with four.
- Sharan also set the school single-season record with a scoring average of 71.9 in the first round and 70.8 in the second round and is tied for sixth with a mark of 72.7 in the third round.
- Maurice is tied for sixth with an average of 72.9 in the first round, is second with 71.5 in the second round and fifth with 72.4 in the third round.
- Hatton and Kraft are tied for fifth at 73.0 in the second round while Dela Torre was tied for ninth at 72.9 in the third round.
- Maurice concluded her career ranked sixth in program history with a career scoring average of 73.93 while Sharan was seventh at 74.12.
- Maurice is also tied for first place with 10 career top five finishes, second with 15 top 10 finishes and tied for fifth with 18 top 20 showings.
- Sharan is ninth with five top five and nine top 10 finishes.
- Maurice tied Jennifer Koga's school career record with 43 rounds at or below par while Sharan is third with 40 rounds.
- Maurice also set the school record with 126 career rounds played while Sharan is tied for second with 117.
- Maurice and Kraft are tied for second with 12 career rounds in the 60s while Sharan is fourth with 11.
