CHARLTON AND COBURN EACH PLACE THIRD ON SECOND DAY OF BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Pair each earn all-conference honors behind career highs in decathlon and heptathlopn

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Eliana Coburn and Jack Charlton each earned all-Big Sky honors as the pair finished in third place in the heptathlon and decathlon, respectively on Thursday at Hornet Stadium during the second day of the 2025 Big Sky Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Coburn scored a career-high 5,068 points which places her sixth in school history and was the most a Hornet since Elizabeth Venzon (5,322) and Kassandra Corrigan (5,163) at the 2017 Big Sky Outdoor meet — the last time Sacramento State hosted the event prior to this year. The senior entered the day in third place and maintained her standing throughout the final three events after placing third in the long jump (career-best 17-11.00), third in the javelin (103-08) and sixth in the 800 (2:29.49).

Montana's Whitney Morrison had the top mark in each of the three events on Thursday to win the heptathlon with 5,389 points. Morrison had a narrow lead entering the 800 and then blew away the field with a time of 2:19.08 to finish 12.56 seconds faster ahead of her closest threat. Kylee Dimick from Idaho State was second overall with 5,181 points.

Coburn's third place finish was her third all-Big Sky performance of her career in a multi and the sixth time she scored points in either the pentathlon or heptathlon at a Big Sky Championship.

For the second consecutive day, the decathlon was not without drama. After starting Thursday with a time of 15.45 in the 110-hurdles and a discus throw of 128-01, Charlton found himself in the center of attention in the pole vault. The senior cleared his first bar at 9-06.25 and then passed at the next increment. He returned at 10-02.00 and missed on his first two attempts. The second ended with Charlton laying facing first on the pit dealing with a right leg injury which forced him to pass on his final attempt at that height as well as the three on the next bar. When Charlton was healthy enough to return for one attempt at 10-10.00 he cleared the bar only to see it fall on his way to the pit. However, the officials ruled that the bar was knocked off by the wind allowing Charlton to stay in the competition where he went on to clear three more heights and set a new PR at 12-01.50. He then added a season-best javelin throw 158-03 and secured a third-place finish by running the 1500 in personal-best 5:16.70.

Charlton totaled 6,470 points over the 10 events to set a new career best. He moved into ninth place in school history and had the most points by a Hornet since Frederick Wagner V who scored 6,503 points in 2019. Charlton's previous best was 5,878 points at the Brutus Hamilton Multi earlier this season.

Charlton scored in the decathlon for the second-consecutive season following an eighth place a finish a year ago.

Idaho State freshman Tom Stoelken won the title in a see-saw battle with Montana State's Mathias Mees. Stoelken led after the first two events of Thursday only to see Mees storm to the top of the leaderboard with a pole vault of 15-05.00. That lead was short-lived, however, as Stoelken recorded the best javelin throw of the day and held on through the 1500.

The main program of the meet begins on Thursday with the men's javelin at noon. The first running event will be the women's steeplechase at 2 p.m. and the night will conclude with the men's 10K at 7:35 p.m.
