SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Led by a second-place finish from
Caitlin Maurice and a third-place showing from
Sneha Sharan, the Sacramento State women's golf team placed second at the Causeway Invitational on Tuesday at Del Paso CC.
The Hornets ended the tournament at 9-under par as a team and finished one-stroke back of Oregon State for the top spot. Sacramento State's total of 285-277-293-855 is the team's lowest of the season and the eighth-best in program history. The Hornets also recorded wins over five teams which were ranked in the top 100 of the NCAA Div. I rankings.
Maurice set her personal-best 54-hole total with rounds of 69-68-70-207. That mark surpassed her score from the 2023 Big Sky Championships by one stroke and was also a stroke off the school 54-hole record held be Tess Blair. On Tuesday, Maurice was 2-under par, shooting 35 on the front and back side of the course. After opening with a pair of pars, she birdied the par-4 third and par-5 fifth to get to 2-under. Bogeys on the next two holes returned her to even where she stayed until a birdie on the par-4 ninth. Maurice started the back nine with a birdie on No. 10 and played her final eight holes even with a bogey on No. 12, a birdie on No. 13 and six pars.
Sharan took third place with a three-round total of 68-68-77-213. The finish was her fourth top-five placement of her career and second this season. Sharan's final round was comprised of three birdies, five bogeys and a triple bogey.
Ella Kraft accounted for the second lowest score in the Hornet lineup during the final round, shooting a 1-over par round of 73. Kraft had a birdie on her second hole (No. 4) but found herself at 3-over 10 holes into her round. She birdied the par-5 13
th and following five pars, added a birdie on the par-5 first.
Freshmen
Darla May Dela Torre and
Tova Hatton posted rounds of 74 and 76, respectively to complete the team total during the third round. Dela Torre had her lowest round of the tournament with three birdies and five bogeys. Hatton tied for 20
th overall at 73-70-76-219. Her third round had a birdie, three bogeys and a double bogey.
Sacramento State also had two individuals competing in the tournament.
Ashley Koga tied for 10
th overall after rounds of 70-72-75-217. Koga's total was the second-best of her career. She had two birdies and five bogeys on Tuesday.
Florencia Dufey had an even-par round of 72 during the third round. Dufey had three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey and finished tied for 36
th.
Oregon State's Kyra Ly was the medalist at 16-under par after shooting 65-66-69-200.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational in Fairfax, Calif., on Mar. 3-4.
