DELA TORRE GUIDES WOMEN'S GOLF IN FIRST ROUND OF RAINBOW WAHINE

Sophomore was even par in opening round, team sits in 13th place

LIHUE, Hawaii — The Sacramento State women's golf team was led by Darla May Dela Torre's even-par round of 72 in the opening round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Monday at the Ocean Course Hokuala.
 
Dela Torre started the round on the first hole and recorded her first birdie on the par-5 second. She made the turn at 1-over following bogeys on Nos. 6 and 7 — her only bogeys of the round. The sophomore played the back nine at 1-under with a birdie on the par-4 13th and eight pars. Her score ties her for 22nd place overall and is five shots off the lead.
 
Sophia Lee, Tova Hatton and Florenica Dufey each shot 74 during the round and are tied for 40th. Lee overcame a double-bogey on her third hole (No. 4) to play the remainder of her round even with two birdies and two bogeys. Hatton had a team-leading four birdies to accompany five bogeys and a double bogey. Dufey, who was competing as an individual, had four birdies, three bogeys and three double bogeys.
 
Ella Kraft completed the team total with a round of 76 and is tied for 70th. Kraft played the front side of the course at 1-over with eight pars and a bogey. She returned to even with a birdie on the par-4 13th but ended her round with a three-hole stretch of bogey-double bogey-bogey.
 
Baylor holds the team lead after the first round at 9-under par. The Bears are 1-shot ahead of Santa Clara and five clear of Nevada who sits in third. The remainder of the top five is made up of Washington State and Missouri which are tied for fourth at 1-under. Sacramento State ranked 13th out of 19 teams in the round at 8-over.
 
The second round will have a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hornets will be paired with Kennesaw State, Boise State and Hawaii.
