WOLCOTT, Colo. — Senior
Caitlin Maurice set the Sacramento State women's golf single-round record with a bogey-free round of 65 during the first round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic on Monday. The Hornets were also aided by a 69 from
Ella Kraft and hold the lead in the team standings after totaling 281.

Maurice was flawless in the first round of the season, picking up her first birdie on her second hole, the par-4 11th. She added a birdie on the par-5 15th and later eagled the 512-yard, par-5, 18th to get to 4-under at the midway point of her round. On the front side of the course, Maurice had birdies on Nos. 3, 5 and 6 to go along with six pars. Her score was 1-stroke better than her previous which had her tied for the school record of 66 along with Julia Becker and Tess Blair (twice).

Kraft was 1-over through two holes but that proved to be her only bogey of the round. She returned to even with a birdie on the par-4 14th and made the turn at 2-under following birdies on Nos. 15 and 18. Kraft was steady on the front nine with a birdie on the par-4 third and eight pars. She is part of a six-way tie for fourth place and four strokes behind Maurice.

Florencia Dufey is tied for 28th with a 1-over par 73. Dufey opened the round with birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 but followed with a bogey on No. 12 and a double bogey on No. 13. After two pars, she birdied Nos. 16, 17 and 18 to get to 2-under par at the midway point of her round. Dufey closed the round with six pars and three bogeys on the front side of the course.

Freshmen
Darla May Dela Torre and
Tova Hatton each shot 74 in their first collegiate rounds. Dela Torre parred 12 of her first 13 holes and was 1-over until bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6. Her first birdie followed on the par-4 eighth and she finished with a par. Hatton, who is competing as an individual, was even through nine holes with a birdie and a bogey. She traded birdies and bogeys on Nos. 1-4 to remain even before bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8.

Sneha Sharan completed the lineup with a 76. Sharan had a birdie and five bogeys during the round.

Sacramento State has a 3-stroke lead in the team standings over Boise State. The remainder of the top five is made up of Kansas (even), Little Rock (1-over) and UC Irvine (1-over). The tournament continues on Tuesday with the second round where the Hornets will be paired with Boise State, Kansas and Little Rock off the first tee beginning at 10:10 a.m. PT.
