BOZEMAN, Mont. — After a four hour delay which didn't manage to stave off a snow storm, the 2024 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships got under way with the first day of the heptathlon and decathlon on Wednesday at Montana State.
Joshua Braun and
Jack Charlton are in fourth and seventh place, respectively, in the decathlon. Braun owns 3,016 points through five events and was aided by a pair of PRs. He opened the day by running 11.59 in the 100 which was the seventh fastest time in the field. He moved up two spaces in the overall standings with a long jump of 20-10.50. Braun then added the longest shot put of his career (31-01.75) but sat in sixth place through three vents. Following a career-best high jump of 5-04.50, he ran the 400 in 53.39 which moved him into fourth place.
Charlton set his PR in the 100 in 11.19 seconds which ranked third on the day. He followed with a long jump of 21-02.75 and then moved into second place overall with a shot put of 35-09.50. Charlton remained in the top five in the standings after clearing 5-08.00 in the high jump but dropped to seventh after completing the 400 in 1:08.43 while battling a hamstring strain.
Eliana Coburn is fourth in the heptathlon through four events. Coburn ran 14.77 in the 100-hurdles and added a high jump of 5-02.25 and a shot put of 30-05.75 which were both just a quarter-inch off her season best. Coburn completed the day with a 200 time of 27.23.
She has 2,940 points and is within 214 points of the lead currently held by Montana State's Shelby Schweyen. The heptathlon concludes on Thursday with the long jump, javelin and 800.
Montana State's Nicola Paletti leads the decathlon with 3,536 points.The final five events of the decathlon are the 110-hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500.
