CLE ELUM, Wash. — Caitlin Maurice shot a 1-over par round of 73 to pace the Sacramento State women's golf team during a windy and cold second round of the NCAA Cle Elum Regional on Tuesday at Tumble Creek Golf Course.
The Hornets finished the day at 17-over par as a team and dropped a spot to ninth place in the field. Top-ranked Stanford appeared to be the only team not affected by the conditions as the Cardinal were 14-under during the day and the only team to finish under par. Stanford overtook Duke for the top spot in the standings and will take a 12-stroke lead into the final round. Virginia and Arizona State occupy third and fourth place, respectively, while San Jose State and Long Beach State are tied for the crucial fifth-place position with one round remaining. The top five teams at the end of the third round will advance to the NCAA Championships.
Maurice had a steady second round which included a birdie, 15 pars and a pair of bogeys. She opened play with a bogey on the first hole and returned to even with a birdie on the par-4 sixth. Maurice played her final 12 holes at 1-over par with 11 pars and her lone bogey coming on the par-4 10th. Her score was tied for the fourth lowest by a Hornet in the second round of an NCAA regional.
Jennifer Koga and
Ella Kraft each totaled 77 during the second round. Koga double bogeyed the first hole but played her next 11 holes even with birdies on Nos. 3 and 7 and bogeys on Nos. 6 and 9. She was 3-over on the back side of the course with bogeys on Nos. 13, 15 and 16.
Kraft was 3-over through the first four holes before parring the next five. She started the back nine with a pair of bogeys, birdied the par-4 12th and bogeyed the par-3 13th. She was over over the final five holes with a birdie and bogey.
Ashley Koga contributed a 6-over par round of 78 which consisted of 12 pars and six bogeys. The team also had an 82 from
Sneha Sharan who had a birdie, nine bogeys and a double bogey in the round.
Stanford's Paula Martin Sampedro posted her second round of 68 and leads teammate Rachel Heck by one stroke in the individual standings.
