WOMEN'S GOLF IN EIGHTH PLACE AFTER FIRST ROUND OF CLE ELUM REGIONAL

Jennifer Koga leads team in opening round

CLE ELUM, Wash. — The Sacramento State women's golf team began the NCAA Cle Elum Regional on Monday and were among the top teams for most of the round. The Hornets finished the first round at 12-over par and are in eighth place. No. 11 Duke leads the field at 6-under par and is followed by top-ranked Stanford. The top five teams at the conclusion of the tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships.

Jennifer Koga led Sacramento State in the opening round with a 1-over par score of 73. Koga started the day with a birdie on the par-4 10th hole but made the turn even following a bogey on the par-5 15th. She was 1-over on the front nine behind birdies on the par-3 second and par-4 third to go along with bogeys on Nos. 1, 6 and 8. Koga is tied for 16th place and is six strokes off the lead of Duke's Anne Chen.

Sneha Sharan and Ashley Koga each shot 75 and are tied for 30th. Sharan opened play with a bogey on the 10th but moved to 1-under after an eagle on the 483-yard, par-5 15th. A birdie on the first hole took her to 2-under before bogeys on Nos. 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 pushed her back to 3-over on the round.

Ashley Koga also opened with a bogey on the 10th but played her next nine holes even with a par on each hole. Bogeys on Nos. 2 and 5 rose her score to 3-over and she remained there until a birdie on the par-5 eighth. The freshman wrapped up the round with a bogey on the par-4 ninth.

Caitlin Maurice added a round of 77 to round out the team total. Maurice was 2-over through five holes but returned to even with birdies on the par-5 15th and par-4 16th. A bogey on the 17th placed her at 1-over at the midway point of her round but she, once again, was even with the help of a birdie on the par-5 fourth. Maurice bogeys Nos. 5-7 before a birdie on No. 8 left her 2-over. An errant tee shot which landed out of bounds resulted in a triple bogey on No. 18.

Ella Kraft also competed in the lineup where she shot 81. Kraft had three birdies, six bogeys and three double bogeys during the round.

Sacramento State will start the second round on Tuesday at 9:55 a.m. off the first tee. The team will be paired with San Jose State and Washington during the day.
