STANFORD, Calif. — Luke Dugger shot an even-par round of 70 and
Gabriel Smith added a 72 to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team in the first round of the NCAA Stanford Regional on Monday at Stanford GC.
The Hornets finished the first round with a team total of 296 and sit in 14th place. Illinois sits atop the team standings after totaling 263. Top-seeded Florida State is second at 267 and is followed by Stanford (267), Ole Miss (269) and Texas A&M (269). The top five teams at the conclusion of the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships.
Dugger played his final 10 holes at 3-under par with four birdies and just one bogey. He bogeyed the par-4 second hole eventually stood at 3-over through eighth holes. He began his comeback with birdies on the par-4 ninth and 10th before a bogey on the par-4 11th. After three pars, he birdied the par-4 15th and par-5 16th to return to even for the first time since the fifth hole. Dugger wrapped up the round with two pars. He is tied for 30th place overall and is seven strokes off the individual lead held by Illinois' Max Herendeen.
Smith had a great start to his day, earning birdies on Nos. 1 and 3 to get to 2-under. A pair of bogeys left him even through eight but he added birdies on the par-4 ninth, 10th and 12th to get to 3-under. From there, he had three bogeys and a double bogey on his next five holes to take him to 2-over.
Jeffrey Perry added a round of 75. Perry was 4-over at the midway point of the round with six pars, two bogeys and a double bogey. He played the back nine at 1-over with a birdie on the par-3 17th and bogeys on Nos. 10 and 18.
Jake Aberle and
Zach Mate each shot 79 to round out the team lineup.
Sacramento State will begin the second round at 10:20 a.m. off the first tee. For the second consecutive round, the Hornets will be paired with Siena and the five individuals.
