MARICOPA, Ariz. —The Sacramento State women's golf team had a near-perfect first round and continued to lead the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at the end of the second round on Wednesday at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club. The Hornets finished the first day at 7-under par and lead Long Beach State by nine strokes heading into Thursday's final round.
Sacramento State counted four scores of par or better in the first round and discarded an even-par round of 72. The team's total of 280 is tied for the third-lowest in an opening round of a tournament in school history and tied for the eighth-lowest in any round. The Hornets were led by
Caitlin Maurice who shot 67 which was one stroke off her career best.
Maurice opened the morning with a birdie on the par-5 16th and followed with a par. The junior then parred Nos. 18-3 to get to 5-under. A bogey on the par-3 sixth was followed by a birdie on the next hole. Following three pars, she bogeyed the par-3 11th but earned that stroke back with a birdie on the par-5 13th before closing with two pars.
Florencia Dufey shot 70 to record the second-best score on the team in the opening round. The freshman had two bogeys on her first five holes and stayed at 2-over but played her remaining 14 holes at 4-under. Dufey began her charge with a birdie on the par-4 eighth. After a par, she birdied Nos. 10, 11 and 13 to get to 2-under par.
Jennifer Koga, who was the medalist at the event last year, started with a round of 71. Koga was 2-over at the midway point of her round but returned to even with birdies on the par-4 eighth and ninth holes. However, bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11 slowed her momentum before she rallied with three straight birdies on Nos. 12-14.
Ella Kraft and
Sneha Sharan each shot 72 during the first round. Kraft as both had two birdies, 15 pars and a double bogey.
In the second round, Koga and Sharan each shot 70 to lead the team. Koga picked up where she left off in the first round with a birdie on No. 16 to start her round. She moved to 2-under following a birdie on the par-4 18th and stayed there until a bogey on the par-3 fourth. Koga added birdies on Nos. 6-8 to get tu 4-under which was her lowest point of the round. She was 2-over on her final seven holes with a birdie and three bogeys. The senior is tied for fifth place overall at 71-70-141 and is five strokes off the lead.
Sharan also began the second round with a birdie on No. 16 and found herself even through 12 holes. She started the back nine with a birdie on No. 10 but followed with a bogey on No. 11. After a par, she birdied the par-5 13th and par-14 14th. Sharen is tied for eighth overall.
Mauruce holds the highest position in the standings as she is tied for third overall at 67-74-140. Her afternoon started with a birdie on No. 16 but she was 2-over through eight holes after bogeys on Nos. 1, 3 and 5. After seven pars, Maurice bracketed birdies on Nos. 13 and 15 around a bogey on No. 14.
Kraft completed the team total with a round of 76 and is tied for 29th place. Kraft had three birdies and and seven pars in her second round. Dufey is tied with Kraft for 29th after recording a round of 78 in the second round. The Hornets were also represented by
Ashley Koga who was competing as an individual. Koga shot 80-73-153 and is tied for 63rd place.
The third round begins with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.
