OGDEN, Utah -- Sacramento State mustered five hits in two games, and dropped both contests of a doubleheader at Weber State on Friday afternoon. The Hornets lost Game 1 by a 5-0 score, followed by an 8-0 defeat in the nightcap.
For the fifth straight game, the Hornets were playing without the team's best offensive player (and one of the best players in program history)
Lewa Day to injury. Losing Day in the lineup has been a massive blow to the offense. In 36 innings without Day in the lineup, the Hornets are batting .125 (15-for-120) with just three runs scored. Day exited in the first inning of the opening game vs. Portland State (April 12) after hitting a home run, and has not returned because of the injury.
Sacramento State has been shut out four times in the last five games after being shut out just four times in the first 35 games of the season.
The Hornets dropped to 22-18 overall and 3-4 in the Big Sky Conference. Weber State improved to 19-22 and 7-4 in league. The teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow at 11 a.m. PT.
Sacramento State's offense combined to go 5-for-40 in today's doubleheader against Weber State pitchers Cali McCraw and Brooke Hatfield. McCraw threw a two-hit shutout in Game 2, and Hatfield tossed a three-hit shutout in Game 1. The two hurlers combined to yield just one walk. Hornet batters struck out just five times.
Haley Hanson hit safely in both games, combining to go 2-for-5.
Andrea Lira,
Nikki Barboza and
Gwen Ludwig had the other hits. The highlight of the day was Hanson stealing two bags, becoming the new Sacramento State career record holder with 42 stolen bases. She surpassed the previous record of 40, held by Hilary Johnson (2005-08).
In addition, Hanson is now 19-for-20 in stolen base attempts this season, having already surpassed the previous Hornet single-season record of 16, set by Nene Alas in 2019.
Marissa Bertuccio,
