CHAMPIONS AGAIN! WOMEN'S GOLF BRINGS HOME BIG SKY TITLE

Five Hornets named to all-conference team, including Sharan as Player of the Year

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. — The Sacramento State women's golf team captured its sixth Big Sky Conference Championship overall and fourth in the last five with a 14-shot victory at Wigwam Golf Resort on Wednesday. By virtue of the win, the Hornets earn an automatic berth to an NCAA Regional.

Sacramento State finished the three-day, three-round event with a total of 282-282-286-850 to conclude the tournament at 2-under on the par-71 course. The score is the lowest total for the team in school history at the Big Sky Championship and ranks second in school history relative to par (2-under).

Individually, Jennifer Koga finished in second place, Caitlin Maurice tied for fourth, Ashley Koga tied for sixth and Sneha Sharan tied for 10th place. Koga finished under par in all three rounds, shooting 70-67-70-207 to set the school Big Sky Championship record for total and relative to par (6-under). The senior took the lead into the round but could not withstand the charge from Northern Arizona's Lizzie Neale who shot 64, including 29 on the back nine, to become the medalist.

Koga had three birdies and two bogeys over the first six holes to place her at 1-under. A double bogey on the par-4 eighth moved her above par for the first time in the tournament. That lasted just two holes as Koga birdied the par-5 10th and later added a birdie on the par-3 13th. Following three pars, she closed the tournament with a birdie on No. 17 and a bogey on No. 18.

Maurice totaled 70-72-71-213 to record her third top six finish at the event in as many years. The junior was 1-over on the front nine with a birdie on the par-5 third and a double bogey on the par-4 eighth. She was 1-under on the back nine with birdies on Nos. 11, 15 and 18 and bogeys on Nos. 12 and 17.

Ashley Koga finished at 72-69-73-214 for her lowest 54-hole total and finish in her career. The freshman had a birdie on the par-5 third and four bogeys to stand at 3-over at the turn. She started the back side of the course with a birdie and moved to 1-over on the round with a birdie on the par-3 13th. She was 1-over on the final five holes with four pars and a bogey on the par-3 15th.

Sharan shot 70-74-72-216 to earn her third top-10 finish of the year. The junior parred the first nine holes and moved to 1-under with a birdie on No. 10. Sharan's score rose to 2-over following bogeys on Nos. 12, 16 and 17 before ending the day with a birdie on the par-5 18th.

Ella Kraft finished tied for 24th at 73-76-75-224. Kraft stood at 4-over through nine holes before player her final 10 even par. On the day she had three birdies and seven bogeys.

The Big Sky Conference also announced its all-conference awards on Wednesday. The list was headlined by Sneha Sharan earned Big Sky Player of the Year. Sharan averaged 72.86 in nine regular season events. She was the medalist at the Causeway Invitational and tied for fourth at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic.

She was joined on the first team by Jennifer Koga, Ella Kraft and Caitlin Maurice. Koga became just the fourth player in Big Sky women's golf history to earn four first team all-conference honors. She averaged 73.30 during the regular season and had six top 15 finishes in nine regular season tournaments. Kraft and Maurice each earned their second first team all-conference honor. Kraft averaged 72.96 and had four top 20 finishes during the season. Maurice, who was a second-team selection as a freshman, became the eighth player in school history to earn three all-conference awards. She averaged 74.19 during the year and had two top four finishes during the spring portion of the season.

Freshman Florencia Dufey was named honorable mention. Dufey played in all nine regular-season events, including six in the lineup. She averaged 75.58 during her first season and placed sixth at the Big Sky 54 for IX event during the fall.

Sacramento State will now await its destination to an NCAA Regional. The tournament field will be announced on Wed., Apr. 24, on Golf Channel at 11 a.m.The regionals will take place on May 6-8 at six locations.
