DAVIS, Calif. — Jake Aberle and Luke Dugger each shot 76 to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team during a breezy opening round of the El Macero Classic on Friday at El Macero CC.

The Hornets are in 14th place as a team after totaling 311. Grand Canyon sits atop the leaderboard at 294 and has a two-stroke lead over California Baptist.

Aberle had a steady round with 14 pars and four bogeys. He shot 38 on both sides of the course with bogeys on the par-4 11th and 13th to start his round and on the par-3 third and par-4 fifth on the front side.

Dugger took a less conventional route to his total, using two birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey. He opened the round with a bogey on the par-4 10th and was 3-over at the turn behind a double-bogey on the par-4 13th. He score rose to 5-over following consecutive bogeys on Nos. 2 and 3 but he played the remaining six holes at 1-under with the help of birdies on Nos. 5 and 9 to offset a bogey on No. 8. Dugger found himself in trouble in the right rough off the tee on No. 9 but was able to loft a shot over the trees and land it within four feet for a birdie.

Gabriel Smith shot 79 with two birdies and nine bogeys. Smith was 1-over through six holes before bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17. However, he followed with birdies on the par-5 18th and par-4 1st to get back to 1-over only to have six bogeys over his final eight holes.

Zach Mate rounded out the team score with a round of 80. Mate had two birdies, eight bogeys and a double bogey. Jeffrey Perry shot 81 with a birdie, six bogeys and a pair of double bogeys.

The second round will take place on Saturday with tee times yet to be announced.
