RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Sacramento State split a pair of games on the second day of the Lance Up Invitational on Saturday at Funk Stadium.
The Hornets won their first game of the day over Harvard, 4-1, before dropping the nightcap to UC San Diego, 9-1. The loss to UC San Diego halted the Hornets' six-game winning streak as the team moved its record to 3-1 at the three-day tournament. That includes wins over UC San Diego and California Baptist yesterday.
Overall, the Hornets are now 14-7, and will conclude the tourney with a matchup against host California Baptist tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
The highlight of the day came in the first game where
Caroline Evans (4.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 K) and
Marissa Bertuccio (3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 K) combined to allow Harvard just one run and seven hits. Evans improved to 3-3 with the win, while Bertuccio recorded her first save of the season.
Sacramento State never trailed, scoring single runs in the first and sixth innings, before adding two runs of insurance in the seventh. A
Lewa Day sacrifice fly got the Hornets on the board in the first, an error allowed Day to score in the sixth, and RBI-singles from
Andrea Lira and
Alexis Parish accounted for runs in the seventh.
Parish finished with a pair of hits, while Day was 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
Gwen Ludwig and Lira had the Hornets' other hits as Sacramento State finished with just five hits as a team.
In the game against UC San Diego, the Tritons scored in five different innings, and the game ended in the sixth because of the mercy rule. UC San Diego led, 6-0, after two innings and never looked back.
The Hornets finished with five hits, led by Ludwig's two. Ludwig now has a four-game hitting streak. Lira, Parish and
Kennedy Echols had the other Sacramento State hits.
