RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Sacramento State's
Marissa Bertuccio tossed a complete game, and
Arianna Pires' pinch hit 3-run double highlighted the Hornets' 7-1 victory over California Baptist on the final day of the Lance Up Invitational.
The Hornets completed the three-day tournament with a 4-1 record, which included wins over host California Baptist (twice), UC San Diego and Harvard. Overall, the Hornets are 15-7, have won seven of their last eight games, and have the best record after 22 games since the 2003 season.
In addition, Sacramento State is 9-5 away from home, including a 4-1 record on an opponent's home field. The Hornets are batting .313 as a team, and the pitching staff has a 2.91 ERA.
Leading the way in the circle has been ace Bertuccio, who was her usual dominant self again today. The senior right-hander improved to 7-2 with a 1.87 ERA after tossing her seventh complete game. In seven innings, she allowed just five hits and one run while walking one and striking out six batters. She has now allowed one earned run or less in 11 of her 13 appearances this season.
California Baptist took a brief 1-0 lead in the third inning, but the Hornets responded with three runs in the fourth, and four more in the sixth. The sixth inning was highlighted by back-to-back run scoring pinch hit appearances.
Nikki Barboza delivered a pinch hit RBI-single, followed by Pires' pinch hit three run double down the left field line.
Sacramento State scored its three runs in the fourth with just one hit, as the Hornets took advantage of a costly CBU error.
The Hornets had seven hits, including
Andrea Lira who was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Alexis Parish and
Caroline Evans both had a hit and an RBI, and the Hornets also received a hit from
Gwen Ludwig. The hit for Ludwig extended her hitting streak to five games, while Parish has a four-gamer.
The Hornets will play six more games away from home next week, beginning with a doubleheader at ninth-ranked Stanford on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Hornets will also play four games in Stockton on Friday-Saturday against Iowa (twice) and Pacific (twice).
