TRACK & FIELD STARTS OUTDOOR SEASON WITH PAIR OF EVENT WINS

Charlton, Lopez earn titles at two different meets

FULLERTON, Calif. — Jack Charlton and Diego Lopez each recorded event victories for the Sacramento State track and field teams during the first outdoor action of the season. Charlton finished first in the javelin at the Ben Brown Invitational while Diego Lopez won the hammer at the Aggie Open in his collegiate debut.

Charlton threw 190-06 on his sixth and final attempt of the day. That distance moved him into 10th place all-time at Sacramento State and was 4-feet, 5-inches longer than his previous PR which came in 2022.

Lopez, a freshman from Pleasant Grove HS in Elk Grove, Calif., threw the hammer 185-09 to lead a Hornet sweep of the top three places in the men's hammer at the Aggie Open. His best toss came on his second attempt but he finished the day with three throws of at least 180-feet. John Maka was second at 163-10 while Malik Shakur was third at 162-09 in his first collegiate meet.

R'kai Davis had the highest finish for the Hornet women during the day, placing fifth in the long jump at the Ben Brown Invitational with a best of 18-02.25. Davis' previous best was 17-06.25 in the season opening meet last season.
