SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State wrapped up the first day of the Big West Conference Challenge on Friday afternoon at Hornet Beach.
The Hornets opened the day with a 3-2 loss to CSU Bakersfield, and fell to 7th-ranked Long Beach State later in the afternoon by a 5-0 score. Sacramento State is co-hosting the Big West Challenge with UC Davis, and the tournament features all seven teams in the conference.
The Hornets are playing six times over three days, with every match coming at home - the team's first home contests of the season. Sacramento State will play once tomorrow (11 am vs CSUN), and three more times on Sunday as part of tournament play. For the complete tourney schedule, which includes four matches tomorrow,

Both the Hornet doubles wins came during a close matchup with Bakersfield that saw

Kalani Hayes win at No. 1, and
Ellie Tisko/
Caitlin Volkmann win at No. 2. The Hornets could have just as easily won the match, but fell in three sets at Nos. 4 and 5. That included a 15-13 loss in the third set by
Ashlynn Archer/
Hailey Plugge at the 4 spot.
The duos of both Davis/Hayes and Tisko/Volkmann are 4-3 this season.
In the afternoon matchup with the seventh ranked team in the nation (Long Beach State), the Hornets did force a third set at No. 5, but
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin/
Abbey Kadillak eventually dropped that match.
