SAN DIEGO — Jack Charlton set personal best in four of his five events and ranks second among collegiate athletes following the first day of the decathlon at the Aztec Invitational on Thursday.
Eliana Coburn competed in the heptathlon and set a PR in her four events.
Charlton started his day by running the 100 in 11.45. He then set personal bests in his final four events of the day beginning with a long jump of 21-07.25. Charlton added a shot put of 40-02.25 and then cleared 5-10.75 in the high jump. He finished the day by running 52.59 in the 400.
Charlton ranks fifth overall but has the second best point total among collegiate athletes. Benjamin Hougardy of Belgium is the overall leader with 3,893 points. North Dakota State's Paul Olson is second with 3,880 points while Charlton has 3,427 points.
Cobrun's first event was the 100-hurdles where she had a time of 15.18. After a high jump of 5-02.50, she set a carer best with a shot put of 38-08.25. Coburn wrapped up the first day of the heptathlon by completing the 200 in 26.96.
She is tied for ninth overall, and sixth among collegiate athletes, with 2,904 points. The overall lead is held by Jordan Gray of Multistars with 3,447 points.
The decathlon and heptathlon will finish on Friday. The day will also include the men's and women's has as well as the women's steeplechase and the men's and women 5K, 1500 and 3K.
