TUCSON, Ariz. — The Sacramento State men's golf team placed 11th at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Tucson Country Club. The Hornets totaled 297 in the final round and finished the tournament with a three-round score of 299-306-297-902.
Jeffrey Perry led Sacramento State in the final round with an ever-par round of 72. Perry began the round with a birdie on the par-5 10th but followed with a bogey on No. 11. He made the turn at 1-over but quickly returned to even after a birdie on the par-5 first. Following six consecutive pars, Perry birdied the par-3 eighth before ending his round with a bogey on the par-4 ninth.
Gabriel Smith was one shot back of Perry in the third round. Smith had an up-and-down start to his round with birdies on Nos. 10 and 14 bracketing three bogeys on Nos. 11-13. After three pars, he bogeyed No. 18 to stand at 2-over at the midway point. Smith rose to 3-over after bogeys on Nos. 2 and 4 but rallied over his final five holes, carding birdies on Nos. 5, 8 and 9.
Zach Mate, who led the team in the second round, shot 75 on Tuesday. Mate was 4-over on the back nine with two bogeys and a double bogey. He remained there after a birdie on No. 1, a bogey on No. 2 and six consecutive pars. Mate wrapped up the tournament with a birdie on the par-4 ninth.
Patrick Dumag provided the final score toward the team total with a 77. Dumag had two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey during the final round.
Host Arizona ran away from the field to win the team title. The Wildcats were 17-under as a team over the three rounds and were 13 shots clear of second place New Mexico. Long Beach State finished third at 8-over. Arizona also dominated the individual standings with four of the top six finishers. Tiger Christensen was the medalist after shooting 69-72-65-206.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Redhawks Invitational at Chambers Bay GC on Apr. 1-2.
