TUCSON, Ariz. — Luke Dugger led the Sacramento State men's golf in the first round and
Zach Mate in the second round of the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate on Monday at Tucson Country Club.
Dugger guided the Hornets in the opening round, shooting 71 to finish at 1-under par. He was never above par in his round as he began play off the 10th hole with a pair of pars and then birdied Nos. 12 and 14 to get to 2-under. A bogey on the par-4 ninth left him 1-under at the turn but he immediately followed with a birdie on the par-5 first. Dugger parred his next seven holes and ended the first round with a bogey on the par-4 ninth.
Patrick Dumag shot 75 in the first round. The junior was 3-over through his first five holes before playing his final 13 holes even. During that stretch he had birdies on Nos. 3 and 5 to go along with a pair of bogeys.
Gabe Smith and
Jeffrey Perry added rounds of 76 and 77 in the first round. Smith led the team with five birdies in the morning but also had four bogeys and two doubles. Perry had two birdies to accompany five bogeys and a double bogey.
In the second round, Mate shot 74 to pace the team and is tied for 52nd. Mate began the afternoon round with a birdie on No. 10 but followed with three bogeys. He was 2-over at the midway point of his round and trimmed a shot off that total with a birdie on the first. Following five pars, he birdied the par-4 seventh to get back to even before closing with consecutive bogeys.
Dumag shot 76 in the second round behind a birdie, three bogeys and a double bogey. His total of 75-76-151 have him tied for 41st.
Dugger and Perry completed the team total with rounds of 78 as each had two birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey. Dugger is tied for 30th overall for the highest position on the team through the first day. Perry is tied for 56th.
Host Arizona holds a six-stroke lead in the team standings over Long Beach State and New Mexico. The Wildcats were led Sam Sommerhauser who had back-to-back rounds of 69.
Play was stopped in the second round with a handful of teams still on the course. The second round will conclude on Tuesday morning before the scheduled start of the third round.
