SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State scored three times in the seventh to force extra innings, but ultimately fell in nine innings, 7-5, to Santa Clara on the second day of the Capital Classic at Shea Stadium.
Battling sporadic rain all day, the game featured two brief rain delays before finally finishing in two hours and 44 minutes.
The two teams were supposed to play a doubleheader, but the nightcap was canceled. That second game did start and was 1-1 heading to the fifth inning, before rain forced the teams to cancel. That second game will not be resumed and stats do not count for any player.
Sacramento State (8-6) will resume Capital Classic play (weather permitting) tomorrow with a doubleheader vs. Utah State at 11 a.m. Rain has played havoc throughout the tournament, which included the Hornets canceling their game with UC Davis yesterday after beating BYU, 4-3, in the morning. In today's game, the Hornets used a three-run seventh inning to overcome a 5-2 deficit and force extra innings. The big blow in the seventh was an
Alexis Parish one-out, two-run triple to tie things. Parish was the potential winning run, but was stranded at third base. In the eighth inning, the Hornets had
Kennedy Echols at third base with one out, but could not score.
That set the stage for Santa Clara's Leiora Davidson who crushed an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for a two-run homer. Sacramento State went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
The Broncos held a 3-0 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth, where the Hornets got two runs back on a pinch hit, two-run double from
Nikki Barboza. After the Broncos scored twice in the top of the seventh to reclaim a three-run lead (5-2), the Hornets would tie in the bottom half of the inning.
Sacramento State received a pair of hits from both Samantha and
Alexis Parish, and
Andrea Lira. The Hornets used three pitchers, including
Caroline Evans (5.1 ip),
Keeli Smith (1.2 ip) and
Marissa Bertuccio (2.0 ip).
