SOFTBALL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER OVER UTAH STATE, DAY SETS PROGRAM RECORD FOR CAREER RBIs

SACRAMENTO -- Starting pitchers Marissa Bertuccio and Savannah Wahl were both brilliant, and Haley Hanson (5) and Lewa Day (4) combined for nine hits to lead Sacramento State to a doubleheader sweep of Utah State on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The Hornets (10-6) won the first game, 9-1, in six innings, before taking the nightcap, 2-1. Sacramento State moved its record to 3-1 at the four-day Capital Classic, which began on Thursday and concludes tomorrow. The Hornets will play UC Santa Barbara tomorrow at noon to close the event. Sacramento State opened the tourney with a 4-3 win over BYU on Thursday, before falling to Santa Clara, 7-5, in nine innings yesterday.

Day had five RBIs this afternoon, and her 154 career RBIs are the new program record, surpassing the previous mark of 149, set by Jamie Schloredt (2006-09).

GAME 2

Wahl matched her career high with 12 strikeouts and the Hornets scored single runs in their final two at-bats to claim a 2-1 victory in the second game.

Wahl's biggest strikeouts were her final two as she faced runners on second and third with just one out in the top of the seventh inning. She recorded the second out by winning an 11-pitch battle against Brooklyn Pritchett in which Pritchett fouled off eight pitches. Wahl then fanned Alex Bunton on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.

Sacramento State broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out rally. Kennedy Echols started the action by beating out a ground ball to third and took second off an errant throw. Haley Hanson then snuck a ball just over the third base bag for a double which allowed Echols to score from second.

The lead did not last long as the Aggies knotted the game in the top of the sixth. A two-out walk and an error placed runners on first and second before Grace Matej singled to left to plate a run. Utah State loaded the bases with another single before Wahl was able to induce a ground ball to end the frame.

The deciding blow came in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Malissa George belted a two-out solo home run over batters eye in center field. The round tripper was the third of the season for George which places her second on the team.

Six Hornets combined for seven hits in the game with Hanson leading the way with a pair to raise her batting average to .407.

Wahl improved to 3-1 and has struck out 33 in 29.0 innings of work. Today marked her third complete game of the season and she matched her career high in strikeouts which came on Feb. 16 against North Dakota.

GAME 1

The Hornets had 15 hits - second highest total of the season - and put up crooked numbers in both the first (3 runs) and sixth (4 runs) innings while tallying single runs in the fourth and fifth. The four-run sixth inning completed a mercy rule victory over the Aggies, who entered the doubleheader with an 8-7 record.

Eight different Hornets had hits in the contest, including multiple hits from Hanson (3), Day (3), George (2), Caroline Evans (2) and Echols (2).

The Hornets had a 3-0 lead three batters into the first inning as Day crushed a three-run bomb to right field after Hanson and Gwen Ludwig opened the frame with singles. Day finished 3-for-3 with a homer, triple and five RBIs - falling just a double shy of the cycle. That three-run homer gave her the program record for career RBIs. Hanson was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI.

Bertuccio (4-2) continued a sparkling start to her season, allowing just one run and five hits in six innings with four strikeouts. Utah State's run, scored in the fifth inning, was aided by a routine infield popup lost in the sun. She lowered her season ERA to 2.28 and opponents are hitting just .258 when she's in the circle.

Also collecting hits for the Hornets were Ludwig, Alexis Parish and Nikki Barboza.

Utah State used four pitchers in the game, and none of the four were effective against the Hornets' potent offense, which is now batting .345 this season.
