PALM DESERT, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team finished the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate tied for 10th place with a 4-over round of 292 on Thursday at Classic Club. The Hornets totaled 296-300-282-878 over the three days in their first tournament of the spring.
Cal State Fullerton roared back to win the team title. The Titans were 11-under par during the round and finished at 16-under for the tournament to knock off Grand Canyon by one stroke. Cal State Fullerton's Tegan Andrews was the medalist at 70-69-67-206.
Sacramento State was led in the third round by
Zach Mate who shot 69. Mate tied for 20th overall with a 54-hole total of 71-76-69-216. On Thursday, He started with three pars before the first of his seven birdies in the round came on the par-3 12th. A double bogey on the par-4 13th was followed by a birdie on the par-5 14th. Mate was even through nine holes and then jumped to 1-over with a bogey on the par-5 18th. However, he birdied Nos. 1-3 to fall back to 2-under and stayed under par for the remainder of the round capped by birdies on his final two holes (Nos. 7-8).
Jeffrey Perry tied for 35th place at 70-76-73-219. Perry birdied his first hole (No. 9) and got to 2-under at two different points of the round. His last instance came following a birdie on the par-5 18th. The senior finished with five pars and three bogeys over his final eight holes.
Gabriel Smith provided a round of 74 on Thursday. Smith began on the 10th hole and was 1-over on both sides of the course with one birdie and two bogeys on both halves.
Luke Dugger completed the total with a 4-over par round of 76. Dugger's round featured three birdies and 13 pars but was hurt by a triple-and a quadruple bogey.
Sacramento State will quickly get back to competition as the team will compete in the Orange County Collegiate hosted by Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 12-13 in Dana Point, Calif.
