SMITH PACES MEN'S GOLF IN SECOND ROUND OF WYOMING DESERT INTERCOLLEGIATE

PALM DESERT, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf is tied for 10th place following the second round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Wednesday at Classic Club. The Hornets were led by Gabriel Smith who shot 73 during the day. The tournament concludes on Thursday with a single round.

Smith began play on the seventh hole and parred his first three holes. He birdied the par-4 10th and added birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 to move to 3-under through his first eight holes. A double bogey on the par-4 15th was followed by a birdie on No. 16. Smith parred six of his final eight holes with the exceptions being a bogey on No. 18 and a double bogey on No. 6 — his final hole of the day.

The second-lowest score for Sacramento State golfers during the day belonged to Zach Matzke who was playing as an individual. Matzke shot 74 in the second round with four birdies and six bogeys.

Luke Dugger remains the highest Hornet in the standings as he is tied for 32nd at 70-75-145. Dugger had four birdies and seven bogeys on Wednesday. Zach Mate, Jeffrey Perry and Patrick Dumag each totaled 76 in the second round to round out the lineup.

Grand Canyon was able to extend its lead to six strokes over Wyoming in the team standings. Both teams matched their score from the first round with GCU totaling 279 and Wyoming 282. Oral Roberts made the biggest jump in the field as the team was 14-under during the day and is now in third place.

Nicky Kling of Grand Canyon in the individual leader with rounds of 69-76-136. Cal State Fullerton's Tegan Andrews, Southern Utah's Colton Cherry and first-round leader Gavin O'Neill of GCU are tied for second at 139.

The final round will begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday. The Hornets will tee off on holes Nos. 9-10 and be paired with California Baptist during the round.
