WOMEN'S GOLF, SHARAN, FINISH FIRST AT CAUSEWAY INVITATIONAL

Hornets earn second victory of the season

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's golf team earned its second victory of the season with a five-shot win at the Causeway Invitational on Tuesday at Del Paso CC. The Hornets were led by Sneha Sharan who tied for first at 1-over par for the three rounds.

Sacramento State led following each round and totaled 285-294-299-878 to win the event for the second time in five years. Sacramento State now has nine tournament victories dating back to the 2020-21 season. UC Davis finished second at 21-over par while Cal Poly completed the top three at 23-over.

Sharan was 1-under during a steady round which featured two birdies, 15 pars and a bogey. Her birdie on the par-5 15th drew her into a tie for the lead and she held that spot with pars on her final four holes. Sharan finished knotted with Nevada's Leah John as each had 54-hole totals of 217. However, Sharan won the tie-break based on her third score of this 71 compared to 73 from John.

Jennifer Koga and Caitlin Maurice finished in a five-way tie for fourth place. Each shot 75 during the final round and totaled 219 to stand at 3-over during the tournament. Koga was 4-over through 13 holes but responded with back-to-back birdies on the par-3 14th and par-5 15th to help create separation in the team standings after UC Davis had pulled within two strokes.

Maurice parred her first five holes and made the turn even following bogeys on Nos. 6 and 7 and birdies on Nos. 8 and 9. She was 3-over on the back nine with a birdie on the par-5 13th to accompany four bogeys.

Florencia Dufey shot 78 in the third round for the final score towards the team total. The freshman had a birdie, three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys in the round. She shot 85-72-78-235 to place 53rd.

Ashley Koga, who was competing as an individual, recorded her first career top-20 finish, tying for 19th at 75-75-76-226.

Sacramento State will next compete at the Juli Inkster Meadow Club Invitational in Fairfax, Calif., on Mar. 4-5.
