SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's golf team holds a two-stroke lead following the first two rounds of the Causeway Invitational on Monday at Del Paso CC. The Hornets were led by
Jennifer Koga and
Caitlin Maurice who are in a six-way tie for first place at a 2-over par 144.
Sacramento State was 3-under par as a team in the opening round and maintained the lead at the conclusion of the day with despite shooting 294. Cal Poly surged up the leaderboard in the afternoon round and is two strokes behind Sacramento State for the lead. UC Davis is third but is 10 strokes behind the Hornets.
Koga led three Sacramento State golfers who were under par in the first round. Koga was 2-over through her first nine holes with one birdie and three bogeys. She was bogey free on the back nine and carded birdies on Nos. 12, 14, 15 and 18.
Sneha Sharan had a similar scorecard, shooting 38 on the front nine and then 33 on the back nine. Sharan had four birdies and three bogeys in the morning round. Maurice started on the fourth hole and was 1-under par through nine holes with a birdie and eight pars. She moved to 2-under with a birdie on the par-5 13th but moved to even after bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16. She closed the round with birdies on Nos. 1 and 3 surrounding a bogey on No. 2.
The final contributing score in the morning round came from
Ella Kraft who shot 73. Kraft had two birdies, a bogey and a double bogey.
Freshman
Florencia Dufey bounced back from a difficult first round to lead the team in the afternoon with an even-par 72. Dufey had three birdies and three bogeys in the second round and is tied for 54th overall.
Maurice was 1-over in the second round and Koga shot in 74 to place the pair event with a 36-hole total of 144. Maurice bogeyed her first hole of the second round but was never more than 1-over and 1-under during her 18 holes. She tallied three birdies and four bogeys in the round. Koga was 3-over through nine holes but again found momentum on the back nine where she was 1-under.
Sharan is tied for 11th after a 75 in the afternoon. After a pair of bogeys and a double bogey left her 4-over at the turn, she birdied the par-4 10th and added two more birdies with two bogeys over her final five holes.
Kraft shot 75 in the second round with a birdie, two bogeys and a double bogey and is tied for 19th overall.
The Hornets also had three individuals in the field. That group is led by
Ashley Koga who shot 75-75-150 and is tied for 24th place.
The third round will get underway at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Sacramento State will be paired with Cal Poly and UC Davis for the second consecutive day.
