COBURN PLACES FIFTH IN PENTATHLON; CHARLTON AMONG THE TOP IN THE HEPTATHLON

SPOKANE, Wash. — Eliana Coburn scored team points for Sacramento State in the pentathlon and Jack Charlton and John Gibbs are both positioned for strong finishes in the heptathlon after the first day of the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships at The Podium.

Coburn scored 3,630 points over her five events to finish in fifth place. Her total was her highest of the season and left her just 38 points out of the top three in a congested leaderboard. Montana State's Shelby Shweyen won the heptathlon with 3,871 points and was followed by Idaho's Hanna Tait (3,742). The next three spots came down to the final event where Idaho State's Josie Settle was able to finish third with 3,668 points and Weber State's Elizabeth Luttlewood took fourth with 3,640.

Coburn began her day with a time of 9.00 seconds in the 60-hurdles which placed her sixth in the field. She moved up the leaderboard with a PR of 5-06.00 in the high jump for the second best mark in the competition. Following a shot put of 36-05.00, Coburn long jumped 16-09.75 and ended with a season best 2:29.74 in the 800.

Fellow Hornet Abby Sheets withdrew from the pentathlon prior to the final meet. Sheets had marks of 10.50 in the 60-hurdles, 5-01.25 in the high jump, 39-01.25 in the shot put and 15-10.25 in the long jump before retiring.

Charlton sits in second place through the first four events of the heptathlon. He opened with a personal best time of 7.11 in the 60-meter dash to top his old PR by .01 seconds. A second PR came in the long jump where he traveled 21-07.50 for a five-inch improvement on his career long. Charlton had the top shot put among the competitors with a mark of 42-10.25 and then cleared 5-07.00 in the high jump. His total of 2,777 points leaves him 155 points off the pace of Montana State's Nicola Paletti. Cody Teevens of Eastern Washington is 20 points behind Charlton in third place.

John Gibbs made his collegiate debut in a multi event and is in sixth place with 2,556 points. Gibbs ran the 60 in 7.20 seconds and long jumped 21-05.50. After a shot put of 27-08.00, he cleared 5-11.50 in the high jump for the fourth-best mark of the meet.

The heptathlon will conclude on Friday with the 60-hurdles, pole vault and 1000 meter run. The main program of the Big Sky Indoor Championships will also begin on Friday at 3 p.m.
