MEN'S GOLF PLACES THIRD AT WYOMING WORLD MATCH PLAY

Hornets down UC Irvine behind tie-break to go 2-1 over the three rounds

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — For the second time in three matches, the Sacramento State men's golf team needed a tie-breaker to record a win at the Wyoming World Matchplay. The Hornets split six matches against UC Irvine but were awarded the win and third place in the tournament by virtue of total holes won in the match.

Sacramento State picked up its first win of the day from Jake Aberle who defeated Jin Nakao, 3&2. Aberle never trailed in the match, going 1-up on the fourth hole and adding another win on No. 5. After Nakao trimmed his deficit in half, Aberle won the ninth and 11th holes to take control. He sealed the win with a birdie on the par-4 16th.

Luke Dugger soon made it 2-0 in favor of Sacramento State with a 4&3 win over Yaoting Zou. Dugger trailed 1-down after two holes and then won Nos. 3 and 4 to take his first lead. Zou's victory in the round came on No. 5. From that point, Dugger won four of the final 10 holes while splitting the others.

The Hornets clinched at least a split of the match when Zach Matzke posted a 1-up win over Kevin McGough. Matzke was 2-down through nine holes before making his move. Wins on Nos. 10 and 11 drew him square and he took his first lead with a birdie on the par-4 13th. McGough squared the match with a win on No. 14 before Matzke earned victories on the next two holes to secure a tie. After McGough won No. 17, Matzke halved the 18th with both golfers parring the final hole.

The Anteaters three wins were all close. Rei Harshima defeated Gabriel Smith and Jason Tang topped Jeffrey Perry with 2-up scores. The final point from UCI came from Darien Zhao who downed Zach Mate 1-up.

The Hornets were awarded the victory based on total holes won. Sacramento State won 30 holes in the six matches while UC Irvine won 27.

Colorado, which was the only team to defeat Sacramento State in the three rounds, won the tournament with a 4-1-1 win over Cal State Fullerton. The Hornets were awarded third place with a 2-1 record while Wyoming used a playoff to finish fourth (also 2-1). UC Irvine and Pacific were each 1-2 and finished in fifth and sixth place while UC Santa Barbara (1-2) and Utah State (0-3) placed seventh and eighth.

Sacramento State will next compete at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate in Tuscon, Ariz., on Mar. 18-19.
