DANA POINT, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team was 3-under par in the first round but shot 14-over in the second round of the Vanharte Orange County Collegiate on Monday at Monarch Beach Golf Links.
Jeffrey Perry,
Luke Dugger and
Gabriel Smith each shot 69 in the first round to finish at 1-under par. Perry started with four pars and then bogeyed Nos. 1 and 2 to move to 2-over. He quickly returned to event with birdies on the par-4 third and par-3 fourth and remained there with seven consecutive pars. A birdie on the par-5 12th moved him under par for the first time during the round and he closed the round with two pars.
Dugger parred his first six holes before a bogey on No. 4. Birdies and the par-5 seventh, par-4 eighth and par-5 12th dropped him to 2-under par. A bogey on the par-3 13th was followed by two pars.
Smith opened the round with a birdie on the par-3 17th but found himself 2-over after bogeys on Nos. 18, 5 and 6. From there, Smith birdied Nos. 7, 9 and 10 to get to 1-under and added a bogey on the par-3 15th before ending the morning round with a bogey on the par-4 16th.

The Hornets were one of only three teams to complete the second round before play was stopped due to darkness. The majority of the players have one to two holes remaining. The second round will pick back up on Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. and the third round will get under way at 8:30 a.m.
In the second round, Perry and
Zach Mate each shot 73 to share the team lead. Dugger and Aberle were both one stroke back with 74s.

Mate began the second round with a birdie on the par-4 14th and then parred his next four holes. Once on the front side of the course, he had two bogeys and a double bogey on the first six holes to move him to 3-over. He played his final eight holes even with two birdies and two bogeys.
