WOMEN'S GOLF FINISHES THIRD AT EVIE ODOM INVITATIONAL

Sharan leads team by tying for fifth place in individual standings

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Sneha Sharan recorded her third top-five finish of her career to help the Sacramento State women's golf team to its best finish of the season at the Evie Odom Invitational on Sunday at Princess Anne Country Club. Sharan tied for fifth place after shooting 70-69-72-211 while the team finished third overall out of 14 teams.
 
Sharan owned the lowest score for the Hornets in the third round, finishing the day at 2-over par. She played the front nine at 1-over with eight pars and a bogey on the par-5 eighth. The senior opened the back nine with a bogey on No. 10 but followed with a birdie on the par-3 11th. After six pars, she ended her tournament with a bogey on the par-5 18th.
 
Ella Kraft and Darla May Dela Torre each shot 73 on Sunday. Kraft tied for 15th overall following rounds of 69-72-73-214. On Sunday, she was 1-over at the midway point of the round with two birdies and three bogeys. She started the back nine with seven pars but finished with bogeys on Nos. 17 and 18.
 
Dela Torre tied for 26th at 71-74-73-218. She recorded seven pars and two bogeys on the front nine. A birdie on the par-3 11th dropped her to 1-over before she had bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15.
 
Caitlin Maurice recorded a 74 in the final round to tie for 32nd (72-74-74-220). Maurice had bogeys on two of the first three holes but followed with eight consecutive pars. A double-bogey on the par-4 12th rose her score to 4-over and she finished there following a bogey on the 15th and a birdie on the par-4 16th.
 
Sacramento State's pair of individuals each had their best rounds of the tournament as Florencia Dufey and Ashley Koga each shot 73. Dufey had two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey on Sunday while Koga had a birdie and four bogeys.
 
The Hornets held off a charging Miami team to finish in third place. The Hornets were 12-over during the final round and completed the tournament at 20-over (282-286-292-860). College of Charleston pulled away on Sunday to win the tournament by 17 strokes and finishing at 2-under. Furman was second at 15-over. Miami was 2-over in the third round to move from eighth place to fourth and end one stroke back of Sacramento State.
 
Emma Schimpf of College of Charleston shot 68-66-66-200 (10-under) to become the medalist.
 
After competing in three tournaments in less than two weeks, the Hornets will have a bit of break before competing at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Hawaii on Oct. 21-23.
