SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah — The Sacramento State women's golf team found itself in a familiar position, winning for the fifth time in its last six regular season tournaments dating back to last year. The Hornets shot 280-288-279-847 to set the school 54-hole record and win the 54 for IX tournament at TalonsCove GC on Tuesday.
Sophomore
Ella Kraft led the charge with a 4-under par round of 68 and tied for fourth place overall. Kraft started her round with consecutive birdies on Nos. 2 and 3 but was 1-over at the midway point following bogeys on Nos. 6-8. She was near perfect from that point on, returning to even with a birdie on the par-4 12th and then moving into the red with birdies on the par-5 15th and par-3 17th. Kraft punctuated her tournament with an eagle on the 535-yard, par-5 first. her three round total of 69-73-68-210 was a career best and tied her for sixth place in school history.
Freshman
Florencia Dufey was one stroke back of Kraft to place sixth at the tournament and now ranks tied for eighth in school history at 211. Dufey was 1-under through five holes with the help of a birdie on the par-3 fourth. She even at the turn and then dropped back under par with a birdie on the par-4 11th. Following a bogey on No. 13, Dufey birdied the pa-r3 14th and 17th to get to 2-under on the day.
The pair were joined in the top 10 by
Sneha Sharan and
Jennifer Koga who tied for seventh place with a three-round total of 213. Sharan had rounds of 69-73-71 during the tournament while Koga shot 72-71-70. On Tuesday, Sharan was 1-over on the front nine with a birdie on No. 3 and two bogeys. She was 1-under on the back with a birdie on the par-3 14th and par-4 16th to go along with seven pars.
Koga started on the second hole and was 2-over midway through her day with bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8. The senior started the back nine with a par and then birdied five of the next seven holes to get to 3-under. Her run ended with a bogey on the par-4 18th and she closed the tournament with a par on No. 1.
Caitlin Maurice completed the lineup with an even-par round of 72. Maurice was 3-over through her first six holes but got back to 1-under with birdies on Nos. 9, 11, 12 and 15. She finished even after a bogey on the par-5 first. Her scores of 74-73-72-219 tied her for 19th place.
Ashley Koga tied for 25th with a total of 76-70-75-221 while competing as an individual. Koga had two birdies and five bogeys in the round.
The Hornets won the event by 14 strokes over Northern Arizona. Montana State finished third (869) and was followed by Weber State (873) and Southern Utah (874) in the top five.
Montana State's Scarlet Weidig-Valezgquez was the medalist after shooting 67-69-71-207.
Sacramento State will next compete at Evie Odom Invitational on Oct. 6-8 in Virginia Beach, Va.
