WOMEN'S GOLF IN FIRST PLACE AFTER FIRST TWO ROUNDS OF 54 FOR IX

Hornets total 8-under and take a three stoke lead into the final round

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah — Four members of the Sacramento State women's golf team finished under par after the first two rounds of the 54 for IX at TalonsCove Golf Course.

The Hornets got off to a fantastic start, finishing the first round at 8-under par as a team. However, Montana State was 12-under during the round to hold a 4-stroke edge. The Hornets seized control of first place in the second round, finishing even while the Bobcats shot 295.

Freshman Florencia Duffey is tied for fourth place after shooting 70-71-141. Duffey was nearly mistake free in the opening round birdying three of her first 11 holes without a bogey. Her lone bogey of the round came on the par-3 17th and was followed by three pars to finish 2-under. She was 2-under through 13 holes in the second round with birdies on the par-3 sixth and par-4 11th. A bogey on the par-4 16 returned her to 1-under and she remained there with a birdie on No. 1 and a bogey on No. 2.

Sneha Sharan and Ella Kraft are tied for seventh place with a 36-hole total of 142. Sharan started on the first hole and was 3-under at the turn with birdies on Nos. 2, 5, and 9. Sharan double bogeyed the par-4 12th for her lone bogey but earned the two strokes back with birdies on the par-5 13th and par-4 16th. She opened the second round with birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 but was even at the midway point of the round following bogeys on Nos. 6 and 8. Sharan was 1-over on the final nine holes with a birdie on No. 16 and bogeys on Nos. 13 and 18.

Kraft had identical scores of Sharan (69-73). The sophomore was even on her first nine holes with a birdie and bogey . She led the team by playing the back nine at 3-under with the help of birdies on Nos. 10, 13, 15 and 16 but concluded the morning round with a bogey on the par-4 18th. Kraft again was even on the front nine of the second round with a birdie and a bogey. She moved to 1-over with a bogey on the par-5 13th, birdied the par-5 15th and bogeyed the par-3 17th.

Jennifer Koga shot 72-71-143 and is tied for ninth place. Koga birdied two of her first three holes but had a triple bogey on the par-3 sixth to jump her to 1-over. A birdie on the next hole returned her to even. Koga played her final nine holes even with three bogeys that were each immediately followed by a birdie. Her second round started with bogeys on Nos. 2 and 4 but she did not have a miscue for the rest of the round and closed at 1-under with birdies on Nos. 9, 12 and 16.

Caitlin Maurice completed the lineup shooting 74-73-147 which ties her for 24th place. Maurice had three bogeys over her first 17 holes of the day before ending the round with a birdie on the par-5 first. She had three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey in the second round.

The Hornets also have Ashley Koga competing as an individual in the tournament. Koga shot 76 in the first round with 14 pars and four bogeys. She was 2-under in the second round behind four birdies and two bogeys.

The third round of the tournament will have a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. MT. Sacramento State will be paired with Montana State and Northern Arizona off holes Nos. 1-3.
