SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Gabriel Smith and
Casey Leebrick each shot 71 during the second round of the Big Sky Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday at Talking Stick Resort. The pair were both 1-over par during the round to tie for the team lead. The Hornets finished 11-over as a team and fell to fourth place.
Northern Colorado moved into the team lead with a team score of 281 during the second round. The Bears lead Weber State by three strokes and Idaho by five. Sacramento State is nine strokes off the lead.
Leebrick remains the individual leader at 64-71-135. He stands four shots clear of Idaho's Matt McGann through 36 holes. On Tuesday, Leebrick was 2-over on the front nine with bogeys on the par-4 third and par-3 fourth to go along with seven pars. His only birdie of the day came on the par-4 10th and was followed by eight pars.
Smith had the best start among Hornets with birdies on the par-4 third and fifth holes to leave him at 2-under through nine holes. After beginning the back side of the course with two pars, he bogeyed the par-4 12th and later added bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17. Smith is tied for seventh place at 71-71-142.
Riley Bell shot 74 and was 4-over par on Tuesday. Bell birdied the par-4 first but followed with a double bogey on the par-5 second. He parred his next five holes but made the turn at 3-over after bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9. Four pars started the back nine but that streak ended with a double bogey on the par-4 14th. He moved to 6-over following a bogey on No. 16 but surged towards the finish with birdies on the par-5 17th and par-4 18th.
Zach Mate and
Jeffrey Perry each shot 75 during the second round. Mate was 1-over through nine holes with two birdies (Nos. 2 and 5) and three bogeys (Nos. 3, 4 and 6). He returned to even with a birdie on No. 9 but had a pair of double bogeys and a bogey on his his final seven hole.
Perry birdied the par-5 second and stood at 1-over through nine holes following bogeys on Nos. 7 and 9. He was four over on the back nine with four bogeys.
Sacramento State will be paired with Binghamton and Hartford in the third beginning at 7 a.m. on Wednesday.
