MEN'S GOLF STARTS KA'ANAPALI CLASSIC WITH 8-UNDER PAR ROUND

Thomas shoots 67 to lead the team

LAHAINA, Hawaii — The Sacramento State men's golf team is tied for eighth place after the first day of the Ka'anapali Classic by Outrigger on Monday at Ka'anapali Golf Resort. The Hornets counted four under-par scores during the round and finished the day at 8-under.
 
Max Thomas is tied for 10th overall at 4-under par. Smith began his round with a par and then picked up his first birdie on the following hole. The sophomore fell back to even after a bogey on the 18th but immediately returned to red numbers with a birdie on the par-5 first. Following two pars, Thomas alternated birdies and bogeys on Nos. 5-7 to remain at 1-under. He then closed his round with birdies on Nos. 8, 9 and 11 to get to 4-under.
 
Gabriel Smith shot 69 and is tied for 34th place. Smith parred his first four holes but followed with a bogey on No. 17 and a double bogey on 18. Birdies on Nos. 3, 6 and 7 made him even  before a bogey on the par-3 eighth. Smith fell to 1-under after an eagle on the 485-yard, par-5 ninth and later added a birdie on the par-4 12th.
 
Mason Benbrook and Zach Matzke each posted rounds of 70 and are tied for 51st at 1-under. Benbrook parred his first seven holes and then bogeyed the par-5 first. Birdies on Nos. 2-3 dropped him to 1-under. Benbrook played his final eight holes even with a birdie on the par-5 fifth and a bogey on the par-4 11th.
 
Matzke's round started with a bogey on the par-4 14th but he quickly found himself even with a birdie on the par-4 16th. Following seven pars, he birdied Nos. 6 and 9 to get to 2-under. He finished his round with a bogey on No. 10 and three pars.
 
Oklahoma, which is ranked 21st nationally, was 21-under par and holds a four-stroke lead in the team standings. The Sooners are joined in the top three by TCU (17-under) and North Florida (12-under). Jase Summy of Oklahoma is the individual leader at 9-under while his teammate Ryder Cowan is second at 7-under.
 
The second round will have a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. PT. The Hornets will be paired with San Jose State, Gonzaga and Hawaii.
