MEN'S GOLF TIES FOR 16TH AT KA'ANAPALI CLASSIC

Thomas ties for 37th after shooting 69 in final round

LAHAINA, Hawaii — Max Thomas led the Sacramento State men's golf team with a final round score of 69 at the Ka'anapali Classic by Outrigger on Wednesday. Thomas also had the highest overall finish on the team, tying for 37th while the Hornets tied for 16th.
 
Thomas parred his first seven holes and then dropped to 4-under after birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5. Bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9 moved him to 2-under where he stayed following a birdie on the par-4 10th and a bogey on the par-4 11th to end his round.
 
Zach Matzke ranked second on the team in the third round with a 1-under par 70. Matzke parred his first five holes and added birdies on the par-3 17th and par-4 18th to get to2-under. A bogey on No. 1 slowed his momentum and he remained at 1-under after two birdies and two bogeys in a five-hole stretch (Nos. 3-7). An eagle on the 485-yard, par-5 ninth moved him to 3-under before closing his round with a double bogey on the par-12th.
 
Mason Benbrook overcame a slow start which saw him bogey three of his first six holes to get back to even with birdies on Nos. 1, 4 and 6. A bogey on No. 7 was equalized by a birdie on No. 9 and he finished even following three pars.
 
Zach Mate rounded out the team total with a 74. Mate's round was comprised of three birdies and seven bogeys.
 
Jake Aberle tied for 50th overall and shot 72 on Wednesday while competing as an individual. Aberle had three birdies and one bogey over his first nine holes but played his final nine with three bogeys and six pars.
 
Oklahoma, which is ranked 21st nationally, set the tournament record at 63-under and won the event by 12 strokes over TCU. The remainder of the top five was made up of No. 40 Georgia (47-under), Florida Gulf Coast (40-under) and No. 39 Colorado (37-under).
 
Ryder Cowan of Oklahoma also set the tournament 54-hole record with rounds of 64-62-67-193.
 
The tournament was the final for Sacramento State during the fall. The team will return to action on Feb. 23-25 at the Wyoming Desert Classic in Palm Desert, Calif.
