MEN'S GOLF WRAPS UP EL MACERO CLASSIC

Mate leads the team with 1-over round of 73

EL MACERO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team completed the El Macero Classic on Sunday in 17th place after shooting 286-294-306-886. The Hornets were led by Zach Mate who shot 73 in the final round and had the highest overall finish on the team (tied for 36th).

Mate had a steady start to his round with six consecutive pars before bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17 left him at 2-over midway through his round. His score moved to 3-over with a bogey on the par-3 third but that proved to be the high water mark of his round as he birdied the par-5 fifth and par-4 ninth to end 1-over. His three round total of 72-73-73-218 was his third lowest of the year.

Gabriel Smith ranked second on the team during the final round at 76. Smith had a bogey on the 10th hole to start his round and then parred his next 13 in a row. A triple bogey on the par-4 sixth ended the streak and was later followed by a birdie on the par-4 eighth and a bogey on the par-4 ninth to end his day. Smith tied for 73rd overall at 72-78-76-226.

Casey Leebrick tied for a 47th with rounds of 71-72-77-220. His final round was comprised of two birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys. Riley Bell tied for 77th at 71-72-84-227 and Jeffrey Perry tied for 93rd (76-77-80-233) to complete the lineup.

San Diego started the final round in sixth place but shot 9-under par as a team on Sunday to win the team title by three strokes. USD totaled 283-288-279-850 and was followed by North Texas (853), Cal State Fullerton (854), Loyola Marymount (856), San Francisco (858) and UCLA (858) in the top five.

UCLA's Omar Morales defeated Andi XU in a playoff to become the medalist. The pair each totaled 203 over three days with Xu carding a 65 in the final round to draw even.

The tournament was the final event for Sacramento State before it takes part in the Big Sky Championships on March 24-26 at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz. The winning team from that tournament will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.
