EL MACERO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team sloshed its way through wet and windy conditions during the first round of the El Macero Classic on Friday. The Hornets shot 303 as a team and were led by Max Thomas who shot 73.
 
Pacific was the only team to be under-par during the opening round as Tigers were 4-under and have a five-stroke lead over host UC Davis in the team standings.
 
All five Hornets went off the 10^th tee during the round. Thomas was 2-over at the midway point of his round with bogeys on the par-4 13^th and par-3 16^th. He picked up a stroke on the front side of the course with birdies on the par-5 second and fifth and a bogey on the par-3 third.
 
Zach Matzke ranked second on the team with a round of 75. Matzke parred his first seven holes and made the turn at 1-over. Bogeys on Nos. 3 and 4 were followed by a birdie on No. 5. He was 1-over on the final four holes with three pars and a bogey on the par-3 seventh.
 
The team also received a 77 from Gabriel Smith and 78s from Zach Mate and Jai Bahl.
 
The tournament continues Saturday with the second of three rounds.
