BELL, LEEBRICK LEAD MEN'S GOLF IN SECOND ROUND OF EL MACERO CLASSIC

The pair each shoot 72 and are tied for 24th place entering the final round

EL MACERO, Calif. — Seniors Riley Bell and Casey Leebrick started the El Macero Classic with identical rounds of 71 on Friday and the pair remained tied through Saturday's second round as each shot 72 to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team.

Bell opened the second round with a birdie and stayed at 1-under through the fourth hole following a bogey on No. 3 and a birdie on No. 4. He made the turn at 1-over with bogeys on Nos. 7 and 9 and rose to 2-over with a bogey on the par-4 11th. Bell then parred his next three holes and birdied the par-5 15th to get back to 1-over. After two more pars, he birdied the par-5 18th to drop to even.

Leebrick began the day with a par and then birdied the par-5 second. Bogeys on Nos. 3, 4 and 7 left him 2-over at the midway point of his round. He started the back nine with a par but bogeyed No. 11 to jump to 3-over. Leebrick was mistake free for the remainder of the round with birdies on the par-3 12th, par-5 15th and par-3 16th accompanying four pars.

Zach Mate was one stroke behind the veteran duo with a second-round 73. Mate was 1-over through four holes with a bogey-par-birdie-bogey stretch. He moved back to red numbers after an eagle on the 562-yard par-5 fifth. However, a bogey on the next hole returned him to even where he stayed until a bogey on the par-5 15th. Three pars wrapped up his round.

The team also counted a 77 from Jeffrey Perry. Perry was 4-over on the front nine with five pars and four bogeys. He bogeyed the 10th hole and then steadied his round with eight consecutive pars.

Gabe Smith shot 78 on Saturday. Smith tied for the team lead with four birdies but also had three bogeys, two doubles and a triple.

Sacramento State is tied for 12th place heading into the final round. The Hornets shot 294 during the second round and are 13-strokes back of San Francisco and LMU who are tied for the team lead.

San Francisco's Matthew Anderson maintained the individual lead at least 64-71-135. Fresno State's Matthew Sutherland and UCLA's Omar Morales trail by one stroke.

Sacramento State will be paired with Cal, Cal Poly and Denver in the final round on Sunday. The foursomes will tee off the 10th tee beginning at 9 a.m.
