MEN'S GOLF TOTALS 2-UNDER PAR IN FIRST ROUND OF EL MACERO CLASSIC

Leeebrick, Bell each shoot 71; Smith and Mate add rounds of 72

EL MACERO, Calif. — Casey Leebrick and Riley Bell each shot under-par rounds of 71 and Gabriel Smith and Zach Mate finished even to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team to a first round score of 286 at the El Macero Classic on Friday. The Hornets are tied for eighth place and are just four strokes back of LMU which holds the lead at 6-under.

Leebrick and Bell each posted five birdies during the opening round to get to 71. Leebrick overcame a double-bogey on No. 10 to start his round with birdies on Nos. 11, 14 and 15 to get to even. He remained there until a birdie on the par-5 fifth dropped him to 1-under and he closed with four straight pars.

Bell was 3-under through his first eight holes with the help of birdies on Nos. 11, 13 , 15 and 17. A bogey on N0. 18 was answered two holes later by a birdie on the par-5 second. After three pars, he traded bogeys and pars over the final four holes.

Smith had bogeys on his first two holes of the round but those proved to be his only ones of the day. After six straight pars, he birdied the par-5 18th and returned to even with a birdie on No. 2. He stayed even for the rest of the round with seven pars on his final holes.

Mate was even on both sides of the course with a birdie and a bogey on each nine. He stood at 1-over after a bogey on No. 2 and stayed there until the ninth hole where he was the only Hornet to card a birdie during the round.

Jeffrey Perry shot 76 to round out the Hornet lineup. Perry had three birdies and six bogeys during the day.

Sacramento State will start the second round off the first tee beginning at 8:40 a.m. The Hornets will be paired with Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and Denver on Saturday. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
