WALNUT, Calif. — Two Sacramento State distance runners raced late into the night and into the school top 10 on Thursday at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Aiden Maddison and
Santiago Ruiz each moved into the top 10 in the men's 10K in Hornet history with their respective performances in a race which began at 10:10 p.m. PT. Maddison ran 30:27.80 which places him fifth in school history and was the fastest by a Sacramento State runner since Jason Tackett's time of 30:11.32 in 1994.
Ruiz posted a time of 30:47.78 which moved him into seventh place in program history.
The first lap saw the 24-man field pace itself with the runners coming around between 73 and 75 seconds. Maddison and Ruiz then surged in the second 400 with times of 1:08.53 and 1:09.20, respectively. That lap proved to be the fastest for Ruiz during the race. They each leveled out over the next 20 trips around the track with times ranging from 1:11 to 1:17. Maddison saved his fastest 400 for the final lap running 1:07.87.
Maddison's final time was more than a minute better than his previous best of 31:43.75 which came last season at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic. Ruiz was competing at the distance for the first time in his collegiate career.
Earlier in the day,
Tia Oliver completed the women's steeplechase in 11:06.17. Oliver previously ran the sixth-fastest steeple in school history in 10:59.41 on March 24.
