WOMEN’S TENNIS KEEPS ROLLING IN BIG SKY PLAY AFTER DOWNING IDAHO

Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team won its second consecutive match overall and continued to roll in Big Sky Conference play, defeating visiting Idaho by a 5-2 score on Saturday afternoon at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts on campus.

The Hornets improved to 8-7 overall and won in league play for the fourth time in five chances thus far this season. Sacramento State's four conference wins are the most since the 2018-19 squad finished 5-5 in league play. The Vandals fell to 3-12 overall and 1-5 in conference with the loss.

Sacramento State swept doubles for the second straight match — and the third time overall this season — to claim a 1-0 lead in the match. Maddy Ferreros and Julia Moraes clinched the first win at No. 3 with an easy 6-1 win, while Mayya Gorbunova and Tsveti Yotova clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 2.

Weronika Ejsmont and Best Lee then completed the sweep with a 7-5 win at No. 1.

The Hornets quickly put the Vandals on the ropes with a pair of quick victories at the bottom of the ladder. Grace McSkimming clinched the second point of the day with a 6-1, 6-3, win over Lena Beckx at No. 6, and was quickly followed by Best Lee's 6-4, 7-6, win over Saffron Dowse at No. 5 for a 3-0 lead.

Wins at No. 4 and No. 1 for Idaho brought the Vandals to within a point, but Ferreros rallied back from an opening set loss to defeat Rachelle Starreveld, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3), to clinch the match. Ejsmont capped the team victory with one of her own, going three sets to defate Valentina Rodas, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.

Sacramento State continues Big Sky play on the road next week, traveling to face Idaho State and Weber State on April 7 and April 9, respectively.
