Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team swept doubles then proceeded to take five of the six singles matches on the day, cruising to a 6-1 Big Sky Conference victory over visiting Eastern Washington on Friday afternoon at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts on campus.

The Hornets snapped a three-match losing streak in the process, evening their record at 7-7 overall while improving to 3-1 in conference play and 6-1 at home this year. The Eagles fell to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in league with the loss.

Sacramento State opened with a win in doubles for the second straight dual and only the third time in its last nine matches after starting the season by claiming the doubles point in each of the first five matches. Maddy Ferreros and Julia Moraes at No. 3 put the Hornets on the board first with a 6-4 victory, and clinched the point with a win at No. 1 by Weronika Ejsmont and Best Lee, 7-5. Mayya Gorbunova and Tsveti Yotova finished off the sweep with a 6-4 victory at No. 2.

Lee gave her team a 2-0 lead with her straight-set win at No. 5 singles, taking down Isabella Foshee, 6-3, 6-1, but the Eagles got on the board with a win at No. 6 as Kenzington Mann posting a, 6-3, 6-4, win over Moraes to cut into the deficit.

That would be as close as EWU would get, however, as Sacramento State won the final four singles contests to clinch its largest win since back-to-back shutouts over Academy of Art and Fresno Pacific back on Feb. 6. Gorbunova got the streak started with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Scout Mathews, improving to 12-2 at the top spot in the lineup this season and winning her second straight.

Her victory was followed by a straight-set, 6-2, 6-4, victory at No. 4 singles by Yotova, while Ferreros grinded out a three-set, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, win over Jennifer Kida at No. 2. Ejsmont capped the team win with a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (12-10), win at No. 3 over Renata Gabuzyan.

Sacramento State wraps up the weekend with another Big Sky clash on Saturday (April 1) at Noon, hosting Idaho at the Sacramento State Tennis courts on campus.
