BANDON, Ore. — The Sacramento State men's golf team sits in eighth place following the first round of the Bandon Dunes Championship on Sunday at Bandon Dunes Resort. The Hornets were led by a 74 from Zach Mate and are tied with Santa Clara after totaling 307.

Boise State leads the 18-team field with a first-round score of 296. Oregon is three-strokes back in second place, Oregon State and Utah are tied for third at 300 and Fresno State rounds out the top five (301).

Mate is tied for eighth place in the individual standings at 2-over par. He had a fantastic start to his round, opening with a par on No. 8 and then birdying the next four holes. His run was slowed by back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13 before recording two pars, a birdie, and two more pars. Sitting at 3-under through 12 holes, he finished the day with two pars, three bogeys and a double bogey on his final six holes.

Riley Bell is tied for 16th with a 75 in the first round. Bell was even through his first 11 holes with a bogey on No. 8 and a birdie on the par-4 14th. A double bogey on No. 16 and a bogey on No. 17 raised him to 3-over before he birdied the par-5 18th.  After three pars, Bell ended the round with a bogey on the par-4 fourth.

The team also counted a 77 from Jeffrey Perry and and 81 from Gabriel Smith during the round. Perry had two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey. Smith had two birdies, five bogeys and three doubles.

The Hornets will be paired with SIU Edwardsville, Boise State and individuals during the second round on Monday. However, inclement weather could place the round in jeopardy.
