Box Score 2 SACRAMENTO -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team extended its winning streak to three straight matches with a pair of 7-0 shutouts on Monday afternoon, sweeping past Academy of Art and Fresno Pacific by identical scores at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts on campus.
The wins pushed the Hornets to 3-1 overall on the season for its best start since the 2011 squad opened with a 6-1 record through its first seven contests. The Urban Knights and Sunbirds both fell to 0-1 overall on the year.
Sacramento State remained undefeated when it comes to the doubles point on the year, winning both on Monday to jump out to early 1-0 leads in its respective contests. In the opener, the duo of Weronika Ejsmont and Best Lee along with the tandem of Mayya Gorbunova and Tsveti Yotova posted 6-0 shutouts at the No. 2 and No. 1 spots, respectively, for the quick lead.
The Hornets then went on to win five of the six singles contests in straight sets, with only Ejsmont needing a tie-breaking third set for her win at the No. 4 spot.
In the nightcap, Gorbunova and Yotova took home a win at No. 1 against Fresno Pacific, followed quickly by the pairing of Grace McSkimming and Julia Moraes at No. 3 for a 1-0 lead in that match. Much like the opener, the Hornets then cruised through singles, sweeping all six contests in straight sets en route to the victory.
With her wins on Monday, Gorbunova remained perfect on the year in singles with a 4-0 record at the top spot in the lineup and improved to an unbeaten 4-0 in doubles alongside Yotova — all at the top spot in the lineup.
Sophomore Maddy Ferreros picked up her first two singles wins of the season at No. 2, while both Moraes and McSkimming won for the third time in four duals with their respective singles triumphs.
Following three straight matches at home, Sacramento State now hits the road for its next three duals, heading to Southern California for back-to-back matches at Big West Conference foes UC San Diego (Feb. 10) and UC Irvine (Feb. 11). The Hornets then make the short jaunt to Moraga, Calif., to take on Saint Mary's on Feb. 17.
