MEN'S GOLF STARTS STRONG AT JOHN A. BURNS INTERCOLLEGIATE

LIHUE, Hawaii — The Sacramento State men's golf team is in 10th place following the first day of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Thursday at the Ocean Course at Hokuala. The tournament was slated to have single rounds on Thursday, Friday and Saturday but predicted rain changed the format to have the teams play as many holes as possible during the opening day.

Casey Leebrick led the Hornets with a 67 in the first round and is even through nine holes of the second round. Leebrick had a strong start to his morning round with three birdies through his first five holes. He then eagled the 510-yard, par-5 fourth hole to get to 5-under. His first bogey came on the fifth hole but was followed by a birdie on the par-5 sixth. After five straight pars, he dropped to 6-under with a birdie on the 12th hole but followed with a bogey on the next hole.

In the second round, the senior was 1-over through five holes but moved to 1-under with birdies on the second and fourth. He had a bogey on the par-3 fifth on his final hole of the day before play was halted.

Coleman Dupre ranked second on the team in the first round with a 71. The freshman started his round with a birdie on the 17th hole but returned to even with a bogey on No. 18. He was 2-under on the front nine with birdies on the second and fourth and moved to 3-under with a birdie on the par-4 12th. Dupre parred three of his last four holes with the exception being a double bogey on the par-4 15th to end at 1-under. He is 1-over in the second round with two birdies and a triple bogey.

Riley Bell shot 72 in the first round with three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. Bell was even in both halves of the round. He is 1-under in the afternoon round which is tied for the team lead. During the round, he has three birdies and two bogeys.

Jeffrey Perry provided the final score toward the team total in the first round with a 1-over par round of 73. Perry was even through 14 holes with one birdie and one bogey. He jumped to 3-over with a triple bogey on the par-3 14th but rebounded with birdies on the next two holes. Perry has three birdies and two bogeys through nine holes in the second round.

BYU leads the 21-team field at 23-under. Arizona, which entered the tournament ranked 19th, is one stroke back while New Mexico sits third at 14-under.

Long Beach State's Ian Gilligan shot 61 in the first round and was 11-under during the day to hold the individual lead.

Weather permitting, the second round will continue at 10:30 a.m. PT on Friday. The teams will attempt to complete the second and third rounds during the day.
